Adaptations to a folding electric wheelchair

The client contacted REMAP as they and their family wanted to go away on holiday, but were unable to fly with the client’s usual wheelchair. The family had purchased a folding electric wheelchair, which met the airline’s requirements but unfortunately did not meet the client’s.

Several modifications were required before it could be used comfortably.

Bed Control Activation Unit

The client has Motor Neurone Disease resulting in increasing difficulty/being unable to press the hand control buttons to operate a profiling bed. The aim of the project was to provide a modified front face to the control unit which he could operate.

Hand held clamp for preparation of vegetables

Hand held clamp for preparation of vegetablesSeveral children at a special school had difficulty in holding vegetables for chopping and peeling. A device was needed to help them safely handle kitchen knives while keeping their hands away from the knife blades. The device had to clamp most types of vegetable and be easily moved from table to table for several children to use during a lesson.

Flexible steel legs were secured to each end of a wooden handle. A chain mail band joined the ends of the legs together. During downward pressure on the handle, the chain mail band takes up the shape of the vegetable and the legs flex inwards. The vegetable is securely held to the table.

The children can now safely enjoy cookery classes.

Drinks holder

Drinks holderThe client’s movement ability is restricted to one hand which can operate a computer mouse. The request was for a device to enable him to bring a cup (and straw) into the drinking position when required and to retract the cup as needed.

A frame holding bearings and a light vertical shaft with an arm to hold the cup was made. The drive is by a disc on the shaft, against which the output shaft of a small, low voltage motor/gearbox is spring loaded. Control gear enables the client to advance or retract the cup holder by pressing one of two buttons.

The carers can leave a drink for the client and he can access it at will. The advantage is that the cup holder cannot hurt the client even if he holds the button down for too long.
