Shower control adaptations

Wheelchair safety barrier

A barrier along the edge of a set of steps to make manoeuvring a wheelchair safer.

Wheelchair seat adapter plate

We created an adapter plate to mount a supportive seat to a powered wheelchair base for young man with Cerebral Palsey and scoliosis.

Accessible storage

Our client is a powered wheelchair user with something of a storage problem around his flat.   Remap were asked if we could create an accessible solution to utilise an area of his lounge alongside his fireplace which wasn’t usable for him due to a sofa bed needing to be positioned adjacent to it, and being unable to get his powered chair close enough to reach.

Securing an Otto Bock Robby bath frame

Our client is a teenaged girl hoisted into a large/deep electrically adjustable bath, onto an Otto Bock “Robby” adjustable bathing frame shown below, set precisely to her support needs.   However, our client is inclined to move around a lot and a solution was required to secure the relatively narrow frame in place without making any modifications to the bath.

Car arm rest

Our client struggled to drive any distance due to pain and discomfort in her shoulder.

Seated leg press gripping frame

This unusual request came from a local physiotherapy department, where the control panel on their seated leg press machine tended to be used by patients to pull themselves up off the apparatus, which wasn’t doing the panel any good and with an accompanying risk the patient might lose grip and fall.

Ambiturn belt extension kit

We were contacted by an OT who was having difficulty securing the belt around a client who was using an Ambiturn sit-to-stand aid.  A larger belt wasn’t obtainable.

Steering wheel handle with horn button

Our client has a VW T5 Transporter based camper van which had been been adapted in the past for hand control.

A combined hand throttle and brake is operated by the right hand, and the client steers mainly with the left hand, using this handle attached to the steering wheel – similar to commercially available steering wheel knobs which are popular with van and HGV drivers to apply steering lock quickly.

The problem was the vehicle horn was not included in any of the adaptations, and our client was finding it very difficult to press the airbag/horn assembly due to its strong springs – in addition to the obvious problem of needing both hands to properly control the vehicle. The hand throttle/brake setup included some additional switches already, for indicators and headlight dip, but there was no suitable position for us to add a horn switch on that side.

Sound recording intercom conversion

Our client is a Parkinson’s sufferer and found the AC buzzer in his flat intercom too loud and sharp, and needed something which didn’t make him jump every time the doorbell was pressed.

Wheelchair speed restrictor

Our client has multiple sclerosis and has suffered from the condition for 50 years, and it affects her co-ordination. In this case, the problem was an inability to finely control the position of the joystick on her electric wheelchair which then results in jerky operation. Even at the slowest of the 4 selectable speeds available, she still felt out of control with it as she tends to use the joystick either full on or off.

Scalextric control adaptation

Our young client has CP and was unable to grip and operate a conventional Scalextric trigger control.

Tenor horn support

Our young client has effective use of only one hand, and required a stand for a tenor horn to allow her to play the instrument.

Support chair

Our client had weak posture resulting in pronounced leaning to the right both standing and seated, and wanted to feel supported and held in a more upright position whilst seated at the dining table.

Hob guide

Our client already had a cooker hob guide made for him in the past, which helped to locate pans on a ceramic hob and reduce the risk of accident, but this was in a poor state of repair.

Supermarket trolley linkage

Our client has MS and relied on her wheelchair and help to get around, but found that her new wheelchair had side frames that were much further back than usual, such that she could no longer use the special wheelchair trolleys at her local Morrisons supermarket when she went shopping with her carer. Using a separate trolley significantly increases the time to do the shopping as well as being a bit impractical.

Transferring to one of the in-store electric buggies which are also available was out of the question.

Round cooker knob adaptation

Our client has arthritis and found her cooker controls a little difficult to turn. There are some commercially available gadgets on the market but these don’t tend to help when the controls are round as in this case.
