She was inspired by Remapedia to ask us if there was something that could be made for her.
3D Printed Guitar Stand
6th April 2023
The client is a semi professional guitarist in a band, but has a tumour in the area of the right collarbone. This means that the strap of the guitar presses on it and is painful.
There was a device called the “MBrace” which discontinued production a few years ago, which supported any guitar on a microphone stand and allowed it to swivel to the right angle for playing. This takes the weight of the instrument off the shoulder and allows the player to walk up to the guitar from behind to play.
The challenge therefore was to make a similar support to the M Brace to suit all of the client’s different guitars (around eight in all) both electric and classical to allow her to play them comfortably and switch guitars during a performance.

Drum Stool Removable Backrest
3rd September 2020
A professional drummer with Motor Neurone Disease could not get onto the stool for his drum kit from his wheel chair. He had quite strong arms therefore he could shuffle forward over the stool, leaving the wheelchair behind him.
This method of getting onto the stool meant that there could not be a fixed back rest as it would get in the way during transfers.
Some means of folding the backrest down while transferring was needed, allowing him to get the backrest up again and fixed unaided.

Marathon crutches
13th April 2014
A London marathon entrant broke his ankle but was determined to carry on, using crutches but “running” on crutches poses problems:
1. Crutches hit road at an acute angle, so often skids.
2. Cause rapid wear to rubber tips.
3. Severe impacts are transmitted to upper limb joints causing multiple injuries.
4. Standard crutches rapidly suffer structural failure.
Crutches were modified by having tungsten carbide points projected through rubber tips, preventing skidding and accelerated wear. Telescopic gas springs with hydraulic shock absorption were fitted. Memory foam was fitted to hand grips spreading the load over the palm area. All metal joints welded.
The marathon was completed without injury in 8 hours 17 minutes.
Bespoke drop-down bed lever
10th March 2014
The client has chronic pain, and an above knee amputation, and her medication causes drowsiness. To relieve pain, she sits on the bed edge, often falling when she dozes. She needs support when sitting there, whilst remaining independent in transfers.
A drop-down bed lever, allowing access on/off the bed when in the lowered position was made. When raised, the mushroom top allowed her to doze safely, without over-balancing. She was also able to use this to pull herself up from lying. The client can transfer to and from her bed and is safe in bed.
