Crochet and Knitting Helper
Gladys is a very determined and resourceful lady who although she suffers from tremors and the effects of a stroke, she is very keen to make the best of situations and to overcome difficulties. In the past, Gladys has always enjoyed crochet and knitting and was looking for a way to resume her passion for both of these hobbies. Her tremors and weakness in her left side made it very difficult for her to do either.
The solution
Gerry Van Hee and Sue Marshall from the York panel came up with two solutions to help:
The first – a Crochet table – a small bespoke wooden table that fits snugly over Gladys’ lap coupled with a small cushion that allows her to hold the piece of crochet work firmly with one hand whilst she crochets using just the other. The positioning of work piece this way reduced the effect of the tremors in both her hands.
The second – a Knitting cushion – based on an idea from the Shetlands – a cushion with padded holes which holds the end of the needle so it lies across Gladys’ lap and allows her to hold the knitting in place whilst she knits with one hand.
The cushion has two holes to support different sizes of needles.
The benefit
Gladys can now once more enjoy two of her favourite hobbies again!
