Double buggy wheelchair attachment
To design a double buggy to suit twins of between 18 months to 5 years old and which would allow the client to independently go out for walks. The buggy must be easily attached/detached from the wheelchair by the client on her own and be small enough to enter her flat for storage.
The solution
A welded steel spaceframe was designed on which to mount a pair of standard Hamax bicycle seats which have a built-in springs. The frame was fitted with four castors (two with brakes) which have a springs built-in to give a bit more comfort and compliance. Two L shaped attachment arms were made from aluminium box section and attached to the frame with a swivel arrangment. Two ‘pins were’ mounted each side of the wheelchair structure to which the frame arms could be attached via a sprung-loaded locking arrangement. The arms could pivot and twist in the vertical plane to allow for uneven ground.
The benefit
The client can independently take out her children. She is unable to use a standard pushchair with her wheelchair.
