Raised balcony to aid access

Our client is wheelchair bound and is unable to access his balcony. Due to the geometry of both the room and the balcony, there is a severe restriction on ramp lengths that can be used.

The solution

The level of the balcony was raised using wood joists and decking.

The corresponding handrail was increased too. Originally, there were only two handrails so a third was added. Dennis, our engineer, used stainless tube for this additional handrail and made some supports for it that clamped around the original structure. These supports were aluminium scaffold tube which was then machined and polished. The machining consisted of turning the groove for the jubilee clip, hole sawing the holes then slitting the tube down.

The room width would not allow a single ramp to be used so an intermediate platform was built. This two-stage removable ramp with immediate platform was then installed indoors.

The benefit

The client can now access his balcony and enjoy being outside.
