Scalextric control adaptation
Our young client has CP and was unable to grip and operate a conventional Scalextric trigger control.
The solution
The existing control was removed and replaced with a very lightly weighted hand throttle which our client could use, and electronic circuitry to provide stop/start via two disability friendly Jelly Bean switches. The throttle box is weighted down with bolts in the bottom of the case. A fine tuning trimmer was added to the hand throttle so the car can be set to go as fast as possible without coming off the track if required.
This project was undertaken in 2015. Since then, Inclusive Technology have expanded their comprehensive range of switch adapted toys to include a Scalextric just like this one. Their adaptation appears to be a disability friendly switch and the speed set with a rotary control, and that may be suitable for some children depending on the nature of the disability and dexterity.
The benefit
Our young client enjoyed his Christmas present and could race dad!
