The client has to step up to get into her shower (which she can manage) but stepping down to get out again is difficult for her. We agreed that she needs an intermediate step in front of the shower to allow her to do that. After discussion, we agreed that the step should be about 5 inches high. She also needs a handrail attached to the step on one side, next to the wall (the wall sounds hollow and therefore so she did not want a handrail fixed to the wall).

The solution

The step was made with approx dimensions of 600x 350 x130mm high. It was made of 12mm MDF – this thickness was chosen to make sure that the base was heavy and robust enough to take the weight of a large adult and remain stable. All joints were glued and screwed (or nailed) to 18x28mm strip wood. The handrail and posts were made from 44×44 whitewood and screwed to the base with 3 inch screws. All edges and corners were chamfered or rounded. The whole unit was painted with white waterproof paint.

The handrail was chamfered and covered in soft waterproof beige sateen material which was attached

The benefit

Safer showering
