Rose has cerebral palsy and needs to exercise daily. She has a treadmill available but it is for adults, so the existing hand rails are too high for her since she is only 7 years old. The risk of not being able to hold on to steady herself is too great and there is also a danger of her stepping on the non-moving parts of the machine in front of her. This make (JLL) is very popular for this purpose since it can run as slowly at 0.3 km/hr but it is not designed for children. Similar projects have been done before for the same reason and on the same make of treadmill.  See “Treadmill child safety rails” and “Treadmill child safety rails #2”. However, this time the client was three years older and tall for her age.  There was a real danger that if the same design had been installed then soon she would be knocking her hands against the adult hand rails, which could be painful and dangerous.  So a new feature had to be introduced to stop this happening.

The solution

An advantage of the JLL treadmill is that they all have threaded mounting points set on the inside face of the vertical steel legs.  These are M8 and spaced 70mm apart.  In all three similar projects, these have been used to securely fix the new safety rails in place.  With standard M8 bolts but fitted with 3D printed knobs they can be easily fastened, unfastened and the rails can be adjusted to the correct height.  To avoid Rose hitting her hands on the adult fixed steel rails above when she gets a little taller, a crank was introduced in the rails.  That way, her hand positioning would be safely inside where the steel rails are and thus avoiding injury and a shock that could cause her to stumble.

The benefit

The treadmill as presented was unsafe for Rose to use.  With the new safety rails, she can use it with confidence and her mum can adjust their height with ease as Rose continues to grow.
