Wooden Elbow Crutch
The client is young and active and had childhood polio. He uses commercially available aluminium elbow crutches but they fail at the length adjusters after about three months. He asked if remap could provide something sturdier and longer lasting.
The solution
The replacement crutch was fabricated from 25mm square oak strip. The handle is glue laminated onto the stick with thin strips of oak. The arm grip is plastic and is recycled from one of the clients old crutches. The crutch length was taken from one of the clients old crutches.
The benefit
The client enjoys a more rigid crutch which does not rattle.
What type of wood did you use, and how much did one crutch weigh? If you’re open to sharing, I’d like to know how you joined the different pieces ie handle, lower part and upper part.
Good morning. I have Ms and require crutches to enable me to walk. I have been looking for a pair of wooden elbow crutches for ages and came across these.
