Adjustable wheelchair footrests
Denise is able to walk a short distance, but spends most of her time in a powered wheelchair as a result of multiple sclerosis. When returning to her wheelchair from standing, she found it extremely difficult to return her feet to the footrests. They are not far off the floor and she wanted the independence of being able to do this for herself.
Chris Gibson, a volunteer with Remap Doncaster came up with a solution for her. he replaced the standard foldable pillars that support the footrests with telescopic versions with an internal screw. This allows them to be raised and lowered from the ground. This action is driven by a rechargeable electric screwdriver which is fixed to the chair when not in use.
