Paralympic sailing challenge

Three ex-servicemen were aiming to challenge the existing British Paralympic gold sailing team to represent GB at the Rio games. Two were double leg amputees and a third crew member had a visual impairment. To help with their challenge, the boat had to be adapted to improve their ability to move around freely. Those with prosthetic legs use short lower legs for ease of control, but this makes it difficult to move around a boat made for regular crew.

Stephen Green, a volunteer with Remap Dorchester is a sailor himself, so he took on the project. His solution features a raised floor across part of the boat, raised seating for the helm and an offset tiller made on one side to suit the size of the hook fitted to his left arm. All of these modifications could be unscrewed and fitted to another boat.
