Supporting Exercise in Children & Young Adults with Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy is a condition that affects the coordination of movement, posture, and development. It can range from mild to severe, and people can be affected in many ways. It is more than likely that children living with CP have additional impairments and considering that it is the most common disability within childhood, there still to this day, isn’t a cure. Instead, there have been many studies that have displayed treatment options and often, exercise has been at the top of the prioritized treatment lists.

Results of many worldwide studies have shown how physical activities can assist with helping CP sufferers in their daily lives. Recent guidance from Chief Medical Officers around the UK explains that disabled children and young people should get 20 minutes of exercise each day with strength and balance activities for 3 times a week. Whilst Chief Medical Officers have previously issued physical activity guidelines for UK children and young people, it is the first time such recommendations have been made for those with disabilities.

Regular physical activity has physical and mental benefits for people of all ages. Ensuring children and young people, regardless of their disability status, are as physically active as possible and crucial for their health and wellbeing- now and in the long term!

We know that no disability is the same and we believe that custom-made equipment can help people do the things they want to do – encouraging more independence and quality of life.

For many, treadmills can often be a popular source of exercise, and we’ve helped many children and young adults, by adapting treadmills – Rose is just one example.

Rose lives with Cerebral Palsy and needs to exercise daily. She had a treadmill available, but it had been built for adults, so the existing handrails were too high for her. Being only seven years old, the treadmill was too tall for her height, making it ultimately unsafe. Considering the safety needs, our Remap volunteers adapted Rose’s treadmill. We presented Rose with the adapted treadmill, featuring lower safety rails, which she can use with confidence. Her mum can also adjust the height as Rose continues to grow. Now nothing can stop her from running whenever she likes!

At Remap, we are all about making things possible, including exercise. We know that commercially available equipment may not suit your needs- that is where we can help. If you or someone you know could benefit from custom made equipment, get in touch now.
