3D Knife holder
This project focuses on developing a specialised knife holder for the client, who has experienced right-side weakness and reduced mobility following a stroke. Despite some movement, the client struggles to grip a knife securely enough to cut food independently. The goal is to create a permanent, ergonomic solution that accommodates his physical limitations while allowing him to regain independence in meal preparation.
The Challenge
The client’s primary challenges include:
- Limited Grip Strength: He cannot sustain a secure grip due to weakened muscles in his right hand.
- Reduced Range of Motion: This limits his ability to manipulate standard kitchen tools effectively.
- Need for Support: He requires a device that will keep his fingers and thumb in place while using the knife.
- Hygiene Requirements: The solution must be washable and hygienic for regular kitchen use.
The solution
The proposed solution involved designing a custom knife holder (using a 3D printer), that:
- Utilises a Finger Plate: A device that fits over the client’s fingers, providing support and enhancing grip without relying solely on his weakened muscles.
- Adjusts for Comfort: The holder has been designed with accurately sized holes for his fingers to ensure comfort and accessibility.
- Incorporates a Secure Knife Mechanism: A method (a screw with a knurled knob) has been designed to hold the knife securely in the holder, preventing it from wobbling or falling out during use.
- Customised Knife Angle: The position and angle of the knife has been optimised for ease of use, reducing strain on the client’s forearm.
