Shower Chair Adaptations

The project focuses on upgrading the shower chair of a female client, a 31-year-old woman living with Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. Given her need for independence and safety during toileting tasks, a customised shower chair was essential. The objective was to enhance her comfort and support while ensuring that the chair remains functional and adaptable to her requirements.

The Challenge

The client faced significant challenges due to the limitations of her current shower chair, which had been customised during her childhood. Key issues included insufficient hip support, a slippery seat, and inadequate head and arm support. Previous models, such as the Raz Attendant and R82 Heron, were trialed but failed to meet her specific needs. Furthermore, her health condition requires careful consideration of her posture and stability, making it crucial to design a chair that accommodates her requirements without compromising her safety.

The solution

To address these challenges, a revised version of the shower chair was developed. Key modifications included:

  • Adjustable Headrest: A larger, more versatile headrest was obtained with a new mounting arrangement designed to provide lateral head support yet allowing better clearance of the toilet cistern and enhanced adjustability.
  • Armrest Design: A new armrest was created to mirror the existing design of the client’s motor chair, ensuring comfort and usability without obstructing her movements.
  • Non-slip Surface: A hygienic, non-slip silicon surface was added to the seat to enhance stability while in use.
  • Hip Supports: Adjustable hip supports were incorporated to provide necessary lateral stability without hindering her ability to use the armrest effectively.

The benefit

The upgraded shower chair significantly improves the client’s safety and comfort. After the initial adjustments, she reported feeling more secure and better supported. These enhancements not only facilitate her independence during toileting tasks but also empower her to manage her personal care with greater ease. Her husband was trained to make minor adjustments, ensuring ongoing adaptability to the client’s changing needs. Overall, the project exemplifies a tailored approach to assistive technology, enhancing the quality of life for disabled individuals.
