Easy opening bed guard
A 12-year-old boy requires a specialist padded railing fitted to his bed. At present, he has a ‘gaming’ style bed which he really would like to keep. He requires a padded full-length bed guard which encloses him but also allows him to get out without assistance.
The Challenge
A 12-year-old boy with a rare neurological condition causing sudden (paroxysmal) jerks, twitches, tremors, muscle tensing (dystonia), or writhing (choreiform) requires a specialist padded railing fitted to his bed. At present, he has a ‘gaming’ style bed which he really would like to keep. He requires a padded full-length bed guard which encloses him but also allows him to get out himself.
The solution
A commercial slide-down style of side guard was purchased and modified to fit the reduced length of the bed on the nearside. The buttons of the catches were adapted to make them easier to operate.
A headboard was purchsed and sandwiched between the bed and wall to provide padding on that side.
The benefit
The client can now sleep securely, while still being able to leave un-assisted when required.
His mother’s reaction: “Ian was incredible throughout the process, we are so grateful for him taking up his spare time to help us and all the effort he put in to helping Cameron feel more independent and safe in his bed and also being physically more able to access the trampoline.”
