Daniel Can Bike Again!

After two years without his bike, Daniel is riding again thanks to support from a REMAP volunteer.

Daniel is a disabled young man with physical and learning impairments. One activity he particularly enjoyed was going on long bike rides using an adapted bicycle.

When his previous adapted bike broke, Daniel lost access to an activity that had been very important to him. The model was no longer manufactured, and the replacement bike available to him did not fit his body properly. Finding suitable adapted equipment proved difficult, creating a barrier that prevented Daniel from continuing something he loved.

Daniel’s mum, Samantha, contacted REMAP for help. She hoped it might be possible to adapt the new bike using parts from the old one so Daniel could ride again.

Joe, a REMAP volunteer, visited Daniel and designed and fabricated the part needed to make the bike suitable. With the right adaptation in place, Daniel was able to get back on his bike.

Samantha said:

“My lad is profoundly disabled — he can’t walk or talk — but he’s always loved his bike. Sadly it broke and it’s no longer manufactured. I couldn’t find anyone who could fabricate or repair the part we needed. He’d been without his bike for two years.

The only place he can really be physically active is in the swimming pool, so his bike was really important to him.

Joe visited, went away, and simply made the part we needed. No fuss. It’s totally amazing.

My son has his bike back just like that. What an amazingly talented man, and what a great charity. Thank you so much.”
