Fareda’s Impact as a REMAP Volunteer

As part of Volunteers’ week, we celebrate Fareda, one of REMAP’s exceptionally skilled Medical Engineers.

In her own words, Fareda explains what it’s like to work on a REMAP adaptation.

A case I am especially proud of is the very first one I was assigned. It involved creating an extendable makeup brush handle to help a client apply makeup independently. I remember feeling both nervous and excited, wanting everything to go perfectly. I spent hours brainstorming numerous ideas to find the best solution.

During the first assessment visit, I built a great connection with the client, who was incredibly sweet and seemed genuinely excited about the ideas I shared. I felt highly motivated to do a great job in this case but equally anxious about getting everything right.

When I returned later to deliver the makeup brush, she described it as ‘brilliant.’ It was truly heartwarming. Seeing how happy she was using something I had fully made was an indescribable feeling. It really warmed my heart, knowing that my efforts made a difference.

This case showed me that engineering solutions don’t always have to be complex to change lives; they just need to be thoughtful and tailored to the person’s needs. It reinforced why I’m so passionate about medical engineering.

Fareda’s work serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that our volunteers have.

If you’d like to make a difference like her, find out how you can get involved.
