Guitar Adaptations Help Paul Keep Playing

Paul has been able to return to playing the guitar thanks to a bespoke solution designed by volunteers at our Airedale branch.

Paul started playing guitar at the age of 14 and, in the 1970s, played with various groups in the standard Liverpool 4 formation. After 30 years working as a civil servant, he followed his passion for music by taking a course at Leeds College of Music before setting up his own recording studio, where he composed original music for several documentary films.

In 2022 Paul was diagnosed with progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Over time the condition made it increasingly difficult for him to play his beloved guitars, as he could no longer hold them securely in position and struggled to fully support his right arm.

Last year Paul’s physiotherapist contacted us to see whether we could help. Two volunteers from our Airedale team, Andy and William, designed and built two aids tailored specifically to Paul’s needs.

The first is a modified “Slip No More” device that fits onto the bottom edge of the guitar body. Adapted with Velcro, it holds the guitar in place and prevents it slipping off Paul’s knee while he plays. The second is a specially designed support for an exercise band which helps support Paul’s right arm while he is playing.

Paul said:

“Very clearly as a result of the physiotherapy to my hand and the aids designed and built by the engineers from REMAP, it has transformed my ability to play.

I am now able to play for up to two hours a day which is further improving my physical capability, but equality benefits my mental health and wellbeing as I get great enjoyment from playing my guitars.

I have deep gratitude for the help I have received from both neuro physio and REMAP.”
