The People Making Things Possible – Fareda
Fareda AlWakeel holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s in Medical Engineering from the University of Leeds and has joined REMAP as a Medical Engineer! She shares the impact that volunteering has had on her.
For the past five months, I have been volunteering as an engineer at REMAP, where I design and build custom prototypes to meet the specific needs of clients. My role involves attending case assessment visits to understand individual requirements, collaborating closely with occupational therapists, and following up after deliveries to ensure the solutions provided are delivering their intended purpose.
What I love most about this role is the opportunity to develop creative, bespoke solutions and see them come to life from a mere concept to a final product.
My experience at REMAP has been truly transformative. It has completely changed my perspective and opened my eyes to how my engineering skills can directly improve people’s lives. The work has been incredibly humbling, allowing me to think outside the box, adapt my abilities, and overcome challenges to create meaningful solutions.
Each case reminds me of the impact thoughtful engineering can have on someone’s daily life, and for that, I am forever grateful, Alhamdulillah.
I would 100% recommend volunteering with REMAP, and I’ve already encouraged some of my friends from university to get involved. This incredible organisation doesn’t get the spotlight it deserves. It has completely changed my perspective, showing me firsthand how much of an impact your hard work and effort can have on someone’s life.
REMAP is an amazing charity—welcoming, supportive, and truly motivating. It constantly pushes you to keep trying, learning, and improving while making a real difference for the people you help.
