The People Making Things Possible – Uthara

While working towards her Master’s in Artificial Intelligence, Uthara also made a significant impact as a Case Officer with REMAP. In honour of Student Volunteering Week, we spoke with Uthara about what motivated her to join REMAP and the meaningful contributions she’s making behind the scenes.

I moved to the UK to pursue my Master’s in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Surrey and wanted to find a way to connect with the community while contributing meaningfully. When I came across a volunteering opportunity, I decided to sign up and, as I researched more about REMAP and its work, I was inspired by its mission to create life-changing solutions for people with disabilities.

In my role at REMAP, I work behind the scenes, tracking incoming cases, assigning them to volunteers, updating the portal, and following up on progress. Volunteering alongside my studies has been a fulfilling experience. The flexibility of the role allowed me to contribute effectively while keeping up with my coursework. It has been incredibly rewarding to know that my coordination efforts support volunteers in delivering solutions that improve lives.

One of the highlights of my role is attending the monthly meetings, where we discuss completed cases and ongoing projects. Knowing that the cases I had read about on paper were successfully completed and that the clients received the help they needed is such a joyful experience. It reassures me that the work we do, even behind the scenes, truly makes a difference.

Would I recommend volunteering with REMAP? Absolutely! You don’t need to be an engineer to contribute—whether you’re organising cases, managing logistics, or helping with outreach, every role is important. For students, REMAP offers a great opportunity to engage with the community, develop valuable skills, and make a real difference in people’s lives.
