Adaptation to Dorsi ramp
Our client, Adam, has a musculoskeletal weakness that impacts on his right ankle. He uses a Dorsi ramp to stretch and strengthen his muscles. The request is to make a ramp that will suit Adam’s feet as he grows from adolescence to adulthood.
The Challenge
Adam will soon grow to the point where his feet won’t fit on the platform of the ramp. Unfortunately, there is no adult equivalent of his ramp made by the supplier.
The solution
A box with no top or bottom was made from 18mm softwood ply measuring approximately. 450mm long x 350mm wide x 180mm high and with a central length divider. The corners were mitred, and all joints glued and pinned. Four platforms for Adam’s feet were cut from 12mm hardwood ply and fitted in the box at slopes to match the original ramp, i.e., 10 degrees on one side of the box and 20 degrees on the reverse.
The slopes ran from the outside front corners to the inside rear. The arrises on the inside sections were finished with quadrant-shaped softwood beads and the top and bottom edges of the box were made good with half-round beadings. Handle holes were cut in the central divider and the whole unit was given a coat of clear varnish.
Large rubber doorstops were screwed onto the eight corners of the unit for grip on smooth floors.
The benefit
Adam now has a Dorsi ramp that will be fit for purpose till his adulthood.
