Art head harness
The project centres around creating a specialised head-worn device for the client, a young artist with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, enabling her to paint independently. The initiative arose from a request from the client’s parents, who sought an accessible solution to hold a paintbrush in front of her face, facilitating her artistic expression. Inspired by a similar device previously developed for another client, two of REMAP-Brighton’s engineers, collaborated to design a lightweight, adjustable headset based on the frame of a welding mask. This innovative approach aimed to empower the client to engage in painting while accommodating her unique physical needs.
The Challenge
The project faced several challenges, primarily due to a prolonged period of inactivity caused by illness and logistical issues. Additionally, it was crucial to gather detailed input from the client and her family to ensure the headset met her requirements effectively. Testing the prototype also posed challenges, as it required careful adjustments to ensure a proper fit and functionality that would allow the client to paint comfortably and independently.
The solution
To address these challenges, the REMAP team worked closely with the client and her parents to refine the headset design. During initial visits, they gathered critical feedback on the prototype’s fit and functionality, allowing for targeted adjustments. The lightweight welding mask frame served as a practical foundation, ensuring comfort and adaptability. Following successful trials, the team discussed additional features, such as a shelf to hold paint and water pots, further enhancing accessibility for the client. This collaborative approach ensured that the final product would be tailored to her specific needs and preferences.

The successful development of the head-worn device provides the client with newfound independence in her artistic pursuits. By enabling her to paint without the need for external assistance, the headset fosters creativity and self-expression, significantly enhancing her quality of life.
