Adaptable window opener
This is a simple yet flexible window opener for a client who needs to operate a variety of windows from a distance and from a fixed, low position.
The Challenge
Conventional designs don’t work well for ‘handed’ window handles i.e. those that have off-set unlock buttons. These can also be both right and left handed so some flexibility to adjust needed to be built in. My client has to operate this from some distance and needs to sit down whilst doing so.
Because the angles change when the window is opened the device also needs to allow for the window opening left or right or even upwards.
The solution
This design improves on previous designs by having a large ‘thumb’ thats able to depress the unlock button, theres a ‘stop’ positioned so that the button is located easily. The thumb can be rotated so it can operate left, right and straight handles and the extending arm is made of aluminium which is much stiffer than simple plastic pipe.
The stiffer arm and the locating ‘stop’ were both ideas from the client.
The benefit
Client can now open windows independently which is particularly useful in the kitchen.
