Left Hand Brake Lever for Rollator Four Wheeled Walker
Our Client, Sheila, had a stroke which has affected her right side. Sheila’s day-to-day living is challenging as she is unable to use her right arm and wears a foot splint on her right foot. Her husband said “I would like her Four Wheeled Walker to be adapted so the brakes can be used by Sheila’s left hand only, whilst the right hand is resting on a support”.
REMAP Engineer Peter Miles provided a solution.
The Challenge
Sheila has had a stroke and is unable to grip with her right hand. This means she cannot use her Four Weeled Walker effectively because it has two brake levers – one for each side. Also she cannot control her right hand to hold the right handle. The challenge was to operate both brakes with her left hand and provide a more useable right handle.
The solution
The commonly used brake lever lends itself to to dual braking as the plastic is wide enough to accommodate the barrels of two brake cables. However, the single housing for the outer of the Bowden cable has to be removed and replaced by an alloy block to take two cables.
The handle, in this case cut and bent through 90 degrees, is welded and fibreglassed for a smooth finish.
The benefit
Sheila can now use her walker confidently.
