Lifting Stair Barrier
The client required a barrier that could be lifted to one side and stowed when not in use. The client was unsteady on his feet and had previously fallen down the stairs at night, when transiting to the bathroom.
The Challenge
The client requested a lifting barrier as there wasn’t that much room on the landing for a hinged gate. It was because the client had fallen down the stairs previously and just needed a deterrent/ something to guide him.
The solution
I manufactured the lifting barrier from some mahogany shelving that I had purchased for an other job in my house, the barrier was made of two bars that when down located in two wood brackets on the knurl post there was no lock o keep the barrier from opening.
The item the client had seen on the web site was held up by a pin that I thought may have been a struggle to get in when holding the barrier up, so I designed a small catch that holds the barrier up so there isn’t a need to struggle with the pin, A pin was also incorporated for added security.
Lowering the barrier, a handle was fitted to assist and keep hands away from any place they could get trapped! To lower the barrier the catch requires to be lifted while supporting the weight of the barrier.

The benefit
The client is now able to go to the bathroom unaided and has a guide/ barrier to aide the client transiting from the bathroom. making the client feel safer.
