Side opening cot for wheelchair user to access
The client uses a wheelchair and needed adaptation of a cot to allow her to care for her baby without the need to lower him into the cot.
Folding doors were made to replace the side of an existing cot.
The Challenge
The client uses a wheelchair and cannot lower her baby into a standard cot. Side access is therefore required, obviously maintaining a secure cot side wall when closed.
The solution
Two folding wooden doors were made to replace an existing cot side. These fold outwards allowing the baby to be put into the cot from the side, and the doors not being obtrusive. When the baby is in place the doors are folded back flat against the side of the cot and secure centrally by way of a dowel fitting into a socket.
The wood is painted with a commercially available water based paint. Hinges are facing outwards so that there are minimal risks of pinching.
The benefit
The client is able to care for her baby from her wheelchair or from her bed (the cot is currently sitting next to the bed) without needing to reach over the side.
