Syringe pusher/puller

The development of the Syringe Pusher/Puller project was initiated to address the specific needs of users requiring assistance with syringe operation in medical settings. The project has evolved significantly from its inception, driven by user feedback and a commitment to enhance usability and functionality. The project set out to create a syringe system that is not only effective but also accessible for specific individuals with conditions, such as gastroparesis and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

The Challenge

Throughout the project’s timeline, several challenges arose that necessitated careful consideration and adaptation:

  • User Strength and Control: The user reported difficulty in exerting the necessary force to push and pull syringes due to muscle weakness and joint instability. This feedback highlighted the need for a design that allows for greater control without excessive physical strain.
  • Prototype Durability: Initial prototypes, particularly the 60ml puller, demonstrated issues with durability, evidenced by snapping during testing. This required ongoing modifications and testing to ensure reliability.
  • Fine Motor Skills: The precise control needed for administering medications or drainage was compromised by the user’s limited fine motor skills. Solutions needed to account for this limitation.

The solution

The REMAP project team, implemented several solutions to address these challenges:

  • Self-Aligning Mechanism: A critical improvement was the development of a self-aligning puller, which significantly eased the loading and unloading process. This enhancement received positive feedback during user testing.
  • Reinforced Design: The introduction of strengthened components, particularly in the 60ml versions, aimed to increase durability while maintaining ease of use.
  • Innovative Operating Mechanisms: Various design concepts were explored, including a rotary action for syringe operation and a rack-and-pinion method, both aimed at simplifying the user experience and reducing strain.

The benefit

The culmination of these efforts has resulted in numerous benefits:

  • Increased Accessibility: The design modifications have made it easier for users with limited strength to operate syringes, enhancing their independence in managing their medical needs.
  • User Satisfaction: Positive feedback from users, expressing satisfaction with the latest prototypes, indicated that the solutions were meeting the intended goals.
  • Public Documentation: All design documentation has been made publicly available in a Bitbucket repository (where is this, need a “url” please), facilitating transparency and encouraging further innovation in the field.

This project not only represents significant advancements in medical device design but also embodies a commitment to inclusivity and user-centred solutions. The final units have been successfully tested and are ready for broader implementation, marking a successful conclusion to this project.
