Wheelchair Arm Spacers
Machined aluminium spacers to provide extra distance between the arms on a lightweight/compact/folding powered wheelchair for the occupant’s comfort.
The Challenge
Our client had imported a new lightweight/compact/folding powered wheelchair to help with her mobility, but found the arms were just too close together for her to sit comfortably so she hadn’t been able to use the chair much. REMAP were approached for help.
The solution
Engineer Ian Midgley machined four lightweight aluminium spacers for the arms out of solid 1 inch diameter aluminium rod. Extra long bolts (Stainless M8 x 90mm button head) secure right through the spacers into the original mount point for the arms. The chair still folds up correctly, and the modification can be removed easily if no longer required.

The benefit
Our client was delighted with the result. The chair will still fit through a standard doorway, though extra care will be required with steering.
