Helping Michelle Venture Outside Again
Michelle, who has recently been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and is completely blind, explains how a REMAP volunteer has made her feel secure again when venturing out.
After months of struggling to be able to grip and use my white cane, my occupational therapist Jo recommended REMAP to me, to see if anyone could help me overcome the difficulties I was having gripping and using my white cane.
I had never heard of REMAP but was so desperate I was prepared to try anything or anyone! Thank goodness I did!
A very clever man called Martin Oldham came to see me and I explained the problems I was experiencing using my cane, due to the issues in my fingers making it difficult to grip my cane, and also the issues with my wrist making it difficult to manoeuvre my cane correctly.
In just two visits, Martin created a perfect adaptation which securely attaches my white cane to my hand and wrist. This enables me to use my white cane in the correct manner but does not put any pressure on my swollen hand or wrist.
This adaptation has given me back the security that a blind person needs when venturing into the big wide world. Such a clever solution to a problem that has kept me from venturing outside for so long.
I would like to say a very big thank you to Martin and the team at REMAP. I am surprised it took me so long to discover REMAP and the amazing work they do, so a big thank you to my occupational therapist for enlightening me.
Thank you again, I can’t tell you how much Martin has restored my faith and showed me that people do care.
