Regaining Independence with a Nifty Solution
When our client contracted Covid early in the pandemic, it led to sepsis and multiple amputations. With no fingers or thumbs, everyday tasks like eating and enjoying hobbies became a challenge, however she remained determined to live as independently as possible.
The client and her Occupational Therapist got in touch with REMAP and were paired with Bob from our Perth and Kinross branch. Bob wanted to help the client maintain her hobbies—like painting and craft work—and improve her ability to eat independently, without waiting for a long-term prosthetic solution from the NHS.
Bob designed two specialised holders, one for each hand. The holders were made from padded aluminium plates, designed to fit comfortably on her hands, with an aluminium tube placed where her fingers used to be. The tube housed a magnet at the wrist end, and Bob created a system where small rods with magnets could securely attach to hold tools like a paintbrush, craft knife, and even a knife, fork, and spoon.
This design allows the client to engage in meaningful activities, including eating and pursuing her crafts, with flexibility and ease. Being able to engage in various creative works is something that means a lot to her as she is on her own all day and needs something to pass the time. The client is therefore delighted that the system can be adapted, allowing her to use different tools depending on the task at hand.
When she first tried using the new tools to eat independently, the client said, “Where have you been for the last three years?!”
