Transfer box for car/wheelchair
The client, a full-time manual wheelchair user with a T12 spinal cord injury resulting from an accident over 35 years ago, recently faced a challenge with his mobility. After changing his Motability vehicle, he encountered difficulties during transfers due to the increased distance between his wheelchair and the car seat, along with the wider cills and narrower door opening of the new four-door model. Recognising the need for a safer and more efficient transfer method, the client sought a solution that would bridge the gap between his wheelchair and the car seat, improving his independence and safety during the transfer process.
The Challenge
The transition to a new vehicle posed a significant challenge for the client, as the wider distance between the wheelchair and the car seat made board transfers unsafe due to the angle required for pivoting. As a result, the client was at risk of injury during transfers, which could lead to frustration and decreased confidence in his mobility. The need for a reliable and accessible method to bridge the gap between the wheelchair and car seat became essential, as it would allow him to maintain his independence and ensure a smoother, safer transfer experience.
The solution
To address the client’s needs, a custom-designed bridging device was created to fit over the cill of the car. The device was designed as a padded and upholstered piece that would reduce the span of pivoting and enhance the safety of transfers from the wheelchair to the car seat. Initial measurements were taken, and a prototype was constructed using 20mm birch ply. Following a trial period and feedback from the client, adjustments were made to the height and length of the device to better suit his preferences, ensuring optimal functionality and stability during use.

The benefit
The implementation of the bridging device has yielded significant benefits for the client. After testing the device, he reported great success, expressing satisfaction with its function and stability. The custom solution not only improved the safety of his transfers but also enhanced his overall mobility experience. By minimising the gap between the wheelchair and car seat, the device has empowered the client to maintain his independence with confidence, allowing him to navigate his daily activities more effectively. Furthermore, the addition of protective upholstery ensures that both the device and the car’s interior are safeguarded, further contributing to the client’s peace of mind during transfers.
