Feeding Trolley - REMAP

Feeding Trolley

This project centres on developing a mobility solution for the client, a child requiring a feeding pump due to medical needs. Following recent surgery, the objective is to enhance the client’s autonomy and mobility while ensuring that he can safely and effectively manage his feeding equipment. The initiative involves creating a customised trolley designed to transport the feeding pump, allowing the client to move around the house with ease.

The Challenge

The challenges:

  • Mobility Constraints: The client requires a feeding tube attached for extended periods (approximately 14 hours), which limits his ability to move freely.
  • Equipment Stability: The current trolley struggles with stability and has a tendency to fall over, posing a risk to both the client and the equipment.

The solution

The proposed solution included:

  • Customised Trolley Design: A lightweight trolley with rotating castor wheels to facilitate easier movement while keeping the feeding pump upright.
  • Modifications for Stability: The design incorporated a larger base and an improved rear catch to enhance stability and prevent tipping.
  • Material Considerations: The trolley elements were 3D printed using low-fill PLA to minimise weight while ensuring durability.
  • User-Friendly Features: The design incorporated simple mechanisms to remove the feeding pump and included strain relief for the feeding tube to prevent kinks.

The benefit

  • Increased Autonomy: The trolley will enable the client to move around more freely, promoting independence during feeding times.
  • Improved Safety: A stable and well-designed trolley will reduce the risk of accidents and damage to the feeding equipment.
  • Ease of Use for Caregivers: The design will simplify the process for the client’s family, making it easier to manage feeding routines.
  • Customisable Adjustments: Future modifications based on user feedback will ensure that the trolley continues to meet the client’s needs as they evolve.

This project aims to enhance the client’s quality of life by providing a practical solution that supports his mobility and independence, especially during his recovery period.
