3-Point Child Safety Restraint System
A child with profound cognitive and physical disabilities exhibits behaviours such as unstrapping himself from his wheelchair, which pose significant safety risks during transportation and daily routines. Existing NHS wheelchair services were unable to provide suitable adapted straps to prevent self-unstrapping, leaving the family in a challenging situation.
The Challenge
Ensuring the child’s safety during travel and daily activities by preventing him from unstrapping himself and engaging in unsafe behaviours, thereby reducing injury risk and enabling consistent school attendance.
The solution
Customised an extended 3-point harness system to securely restrain the child in his wheelchair. The harness effectively prevents him from unstrapping himself, ensuring his safety during transport and daily routines and reduces the risk of dangerous behaviours such as removing clothing.
The benefit
Enhanced safety during transportation and daily activities.
Prevention of self-unstrapping, reducing injury risk.
Enabled consistent school attendance and participation.
Provided peace of mind for the family and caregivers.
Demonstrated innovative adaptation to complex care needs, improving the child’s quality of life.
