Bespoke Seizure Alarm Watch
The client Harri self referred, on the REMAP website, to request a custom button watch design to trigger an alarm. Harri is a teenager and gets 20 to 100 seizures each day and requires a one-to-one carer full time. Prior to contacting REMAP, Harri had to hold the hand of the carer to squeeze their hand at the onset of a seizure, due to being unable to speak at these moments. The carer is required to keep Harri safe and reassure any bystanders that an ambulance is not required most of the time.
The Challenge
Harri knew that a standard Button Watch to press and trigger an alarm on a pager system to the carer would not work due to also having Tourette’s syndrome. The Tourettes Syndrome is a neurological condition that causes a person to make sudden, repeated movements and sounds called tics. One of these symptoms is involuntary movements that would press an alarm and provide many false alarms.
A single time event with additional complexity e.g. two buttons to press simultaneously would also be overcome by the Involuntary movements and cause many false alarms. It was deduced that a multi time events to trigger an alarm would drastically reduce false alarms from the involuntary movements.
The solution
A solution was designed to design a 3D printed cover for an off the shelf alarm button watch pager system. Harri purchased the pager alarm system from Amazon : CYSSJF Personal Alarm for Wrist Wireless Caregiver Pager Alarm Call Button Call Bell. 1PC Wrist Pager + 2PCS Wrist Call Buttons.
Once the requirements was captured, including which arm to wear it, and which direction to open a cover, then the purchased watch was given to a REMAP Engineer to come up with a cover design. The following illustrations show the cover design:

The benefit
Harri is now able to wear the button alarm watch to trigger an alarm to the carer wearing a pager system without many false alarms. This allows the carer to not be next to Harri all the time and works up to 30metres. Harri is very happy with the finished product.
