Blow tube for operating personal alarm

The client has multiple sclerosis and is quadriplegic with limited head movement. She wanted to be able to use her personal alarm, if necessary, when her carers were not present.

A diaphragm that operated the alarm via a tube was positioned close to the client’s mouth. The device was made from pieces of board with a rubber ring and a piece of cellophane as a diaphragm, bolted at the corners. A bolt with a plastic disc glued to it protrudes through one end plate, the operating tube was threaded through a length of copper tubing to support it and introduced through the opposite end plate. The operating bolt is held in the correct position by the spring in the personal alarm which was attached by clips. A stand enables the client to operate the device from her wheelchair or bed.

The client no longer has to be in the house alone with no immediate backup.
