Grab rail for existing shower
The client has mobility issues and uses a walking frame in the house. She has carers visiting to help her shower but this will stop soon. She is worried about falling when using the shower on her own, since there is a step over the shower tray and there is no wall to fit a commercial grab rail to assist her.
The Challenge
The client needs to user her hands to steady herself and assist with mobility, and since her shower is directly adjacent to the bathroom door there is no way to fix a standard commercial grab rail. A half-step with rails is not feasible as it would be directly in front of the bathroom door with the rails blocking access (since the shower entrance is perpendicular to the doorway).

The solution
REMAP had previously made a folding grab rail handle for another client – this was no longer required and had been returned. It was adapted with a corner bracket fixing to allow it to be held securely against the door frame

The door frame was recessed to allow fitting without affecting door closure and to add to stability.
The benefit
The client is able to enter and exit the shower with a secure rail to assist her stability. This gives her much more peace of mind that when her carers no longer come to help her to shower, she will be able to shower herself with safety.
The client is very pleased with the hand rail as provided.
