The Challenge

The client has reduced mobility and is unable to leave the house due to a large step down from the front door to the street.  This has rendered the client mostly housebound.  A solution to make the step easier to navigate is required, to allow the client to go out of the house.

The solution

It was agreed that a small set of half width steps could be constructed that would lessen each individual drop, and make leaving the house much more manageable. These have been constructed from decking wood as shown, to prevent warping or rain damage.  The steps are very solidly constructed and can be moved if required.  Due to the profile of the lower concrete step, two legs have been added to provide complete stability – the legs are under the front edge and do not protrude.  All edges have been made smooth, and the steps use zinc coated woodscrews.  The steps have been painted with a weatherproof paint sealing all screw holes, edges and cuts.  The top surface of each step has been covered in non-slip adhesive tape to improve grip.

The benefit

The solution allows the client to pass from the street to the house and vice versa with smaller individual steps.  This will allow the client to feel more confident in leaving the house, which was what prompted the initial request.
