Our client uses a profiling bed that has the facility for mounting an over-bed pole. This enables him to take his weight off the bed to prevent pressure sores.

The Challenge

Our client’s community OT obtained a commercial bed pole, but its handle was positioned too low and not forward enough to enable a good purchase.

The way forward was to design and construct a bespoke bed pole – a project for experienced REMAP volunteer David Chartres.

The solution

Dave Chartres’ solution in consultation with the client and OT was to raise and extend the pole by lengthening both ends by 230mm.

Lengths of steel tubing were purchased from Metals 4U: https://www.metals4u.co.uk

Tubing with the same outside diameter as the bed pole (38.1mm) was welded to both ends of the pole. These were supported by 160mm long, close-fitting sleeves of similar tubing, also secured by welding. The final flourish was to spray the two extensions to match the colour of the original pole.

The benefit

The bed pole is now fit for purpose.
