Mouth / air operated air rifle trigger
The client has little strength in his arms and has involuntary movement in his hands, so is unable to use a standard trigger on an air rifle. The item required needed to be removable as the rifle used was a loan rifle from the gun club. The trigger driver can be seen below the rifle with the red light on it, also the air tube can just be seen.
Lastly, I had to support the butt of the rifle in some way so the client didn’t have to hold the rifle’s weight. He has some movement in his shoulder so a strap passes over his shoulder to help ease and aim the rifle.
Above servo pushes on the trigger. It clamps around the trigger guard.
Arduino nano, 9V battery and a Adafruit LPS33HW Water Resistant Pressure Sensor.
Butt support, the client could move his shoulder a little.
The solution
The solution was to attach a small servo that would push on the trigger. The power required was very little, the servo was attached to an Arduino nano, driven from a 9V battery. An Adafruit LPS33HW Water Resistant Pressure Sensor was used to detect a pressure rise in the tube attached.
As the rifles are adjustable to different users there are some T slots where I was able to attach parts that are easily removed.
Once it is attached and switched on, the client blows down the tube, the sensor detects a rise and moves the servo to the firing angle. The rest angle and firing angle are adjustable and the amount of pressure rise required can be adjusted.
I also made a shoulder pad that the butt of the gun attaches to in order to keep the rifle stable and allow the client to aim at the target.
The benefit
The client has the benefit of being able to shoot without assistance. He requires the rifle to be loaded but he can achieve the rest himself.
Update: March 2023
The client is looking at entering competition and his mental state is better as he has the shooting to concentrate on, he is going weekly and his shooting is getting better by the week.
