ONE-HANDED KNITTING AID
A one-handed knitting aid for a client who had a stroke affecting her left side, and based around an embroidery hoop stand.
The Challenge
Our client was keen on crafts such as knitting, crocheting and card making, but had a stroke in recent years affecting her left side. Her physio had spotted one-handed knitting solutions on the REMAP website and asked if we could create one for her patient.
The solution
Taking inspiration from a similar project by REMAP’s Berkshire group, engineer Ian Brocket purchased an embroidery hoop stand as a basis for the solution as our client had used one of these in the past and knew it would work OK for her.
Ian set about creating a needle holder out of aluminium to allow one-handed knitting. Initially, magnets and collars (steel springs) were used to secure the needle – but after testing, these were changed for a “toggle clamp” to make it easier to move or change the needles if required.
The benefit
Our client was really pleased that she could enjoy one of her hobbies again.
