One-handed scissors
A pupil wished to cut paper and card with scissors like her school friends but has the use of only one hand. A board was devised that holds the card while it is being cut.
The Challenge
Six-year-old Freya has one arm and is a left side four quarter amputee. She would like to use scissors without the assistance of another person to hold the paper.
The solution
After considering many options, it was decided to use a board with DIN rails and toggle clamps to position and grip the paper. This can all be done with one hand. Once secure, the paper can be cut and adjusted without assistance.
The benefit
Freya can now independently use scissors and adjust the paper one-handed allowing the same mobility as class friends without help.
This rig could also be used for other activities requiring a grip, such as cutting material and general crafts.
