Outside wheelchair ramp
Our client, Mason, is a double bilateral amputee who uses a wheelchair. He needed a ramp up to the front door of the family bungalow to help negotiate a 240mm high step. No commercially available ramps were suitable for his specific needs.
The Challenge
The ramp required a level landing area in front of the front door. It was made 650mm wide x 750mm long. The ramp itself was 2.0m long x 650mm wide, that produced a slope of approximately 1:8. Both items were made from a surface of 9mm hardwood ply supported on verticals made from 20mm thick softwood. A 25mm high kerb was fixed to the sides of the landing and ramp using 20mm thick softwood. The components were assembled using glue, screws and pins and the whole was finished in a coat of primer, undercoat and black gloss paint. Once in position, the two parts were held together with two brass screws.
The solution
This well-designed ramp takes into consideration the challenges presented by a high step. Its installation allows easy access from the family home.

The benefit
Mason now has easy access to the outside – what adventure to be had!
