Parkinsons cueing stick
The project focuses on developing a cueing stick designed to aid individuals with Parkinson’s disease who experience freezing of gait (FOG). Initiated with the client, the project aims to enhance mobility and independence by creating a custom walking aid that incorporates various innovative features. The cueing stick is built on a standard NHS aluminium base, enhanced with 3D-printed brackets and a carbon fibre cueing element, allowing for flexibility and ease of use. After multiple iterations and consultations with a physiotherapist, the stick has been tailored to meet the unique needs of the client, including the ability to convert for left- or right-hand use.
The Challenge
Throughout the development process, several challenges arose. The need for a cueing mechanism that effectively triggers movement without causing discomfort or requiring excessive force was paramount. Initial trials with alternative cueing methods, such as cueing tape and laser cues, showed mixed results in different environments. Moreover, there was a necessity to adapt the design for tight spaces, as the client indicated difficulty manoeuvring around furniture. Additionally, the requirement for different handedness versions of the stick highlighted the complexity in the design and manufacturing processes, necessitating further collaboration and resource allocation.
The solution
The solution involved designing a custom cueing stick that incorporates innovative features to address the unique challenges faced by the client. The stick was constructed with a carbon fibre cueing element and a pull handle, allowing for easy activation. Critical modifications were made following client feedback, including shortening the cueing element for better mobility and adding a rubber bumper to prevent jamming. The design also includes a feature to rotate the handle for left- or right-handed users, ensuring versatility. Collaborations with the physiotherapist and engineering team facilitated the development of both left- and right-hand versions, enhancing usability for a wider range of clients.
The benefit
The benefits of the custom cueing stick are multifaceted. First and foremost, it has proven effective in alleviating symptoms of FOG, providing the client with greater confidence and mobility. The ability to customise the stick enhances its functionality, allowing it to cater to individual needs and preferences. The addition of a rubber bumper has improved the reliability of the cueing mechanism, while the design’s adaptability means it can be easily modified for different users. Overall, the project not only addresses the immediate needs of the client but also holds potential for broader application in aiding others with similar challenges, contributing positively to their quality of life. This particular solution worked for this client because, despite having Parkinson’s disease, she retained a good degree of agility and the ability to step over the cueing aid. The physio involved felt that for this reason it would be a solution for only a minority of cases.
