Piano raising

The Client, who had very poor balance and a high risk of falls, required assistance to raise his upright piano so he could comfortably play while seated in his wheelchair. Due to his condition, he could not use a piano stool and relied on caregivers.

Two of our panel members worked together to find a solution, exploring various methods, including the use of raising blocks and an inflatable ball. After assessing the situation, they installed the blocks under the piano.

The Challenge

The main challenge in this project was to effectively raise the heavy upright piano without causing damage and ensuring it remains stable on the thick carpet. The risk of falls due to the client’s poor balance, added urgency to the need for a safe and effective solution. Additionally, the mechanics of lifting such a heavy instrument required careful planning and consideration to avoid potential hazards during the installation process, making it essential to ensure the design was both practical and safe.

The solution

To address these challenges, the two panel members designed and built custom raising blocks for the piano based on measurements and sketches provided by one of the team. The inflation of a baseball was used as the method of raising the piano. By repeatedly placing the ball and inflating it under each side of the instrument the piano was raised incrementally – pieces of wood being put in place at each stage to maintain the height. In this way the raising blocks were successfully installed to elevate the piano to a suitable height for the client to play while seated in his wheelchair.

The benefit

The successful installation of the raising blocks offered several benefits.

First, it enables the client to play the piano comfortably and safely from his wheelchair, promoting his independence and enhancing his quality of life. This accessibility fosters a sense of normalcy and enjoyment in his daily routine.

Additionally, by ensuring that the piano was stable and secure on the carpet, the risk of accidents and falls is minimised, providing peace of mind for the client and his caregivers. Overall, this solution not only addresses the client’s immediate needs but also contributes to his overall well-being by allowing him to engage in a beloved activity, safely.
