Raised Train Table - REMAP

Raised Train Table

The client “K”, a teenager with multiple conditions, has a large train track on a table specifically designed for the purpose, with storage underneath. However, K has grown too tall for the table, and due to having a bent spine, this is causing him significant distress. The foster carers have already tried using blocks to raise the height of the table but it has now become unsteady and is still not high enough. Despite these challenges, K’s love for his trains and the table remains strong.

The Challenge

Train table needs raising to the height of a kitchen worktop to enable the client to play with his train set while standing.

The solution

Two support stands were constructed from timber to match the existing table and were than installed underneath the table. The stands increase the height of the table by 400mm raising it to the same height as a kitchen worktop (920mm). The stands are screwed to the existing table structure to ensure stability. The legs are fitted with felt pads to avoid damage to the existing wooden floor and to make it easier to move the complete table for cleaning, etc.

The benefit

The client can now play with his train set without having to bend/stoop which is difficult for him as he has a bent spine.

A couple of weeks after the installation his foster mum emailed “thank you for the table adaptation, it’s absolutely brilliant and K loves it. ”
