Rowing Machine Challenge
A man with advanced Motor Neurone Disease wished to do a 24 hour challenge for a world record on a Rowing Machine and requested REMAP to provide side and back support for the seat of the machine.
The Challenge
The client has established a charity to help fund and motivate people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
He has embarked on and participated in a number of challenges to show the ability of people with MND to complete amazing tasks, including cycling for 24 hours, covering 300 miles, on a specially adapted tandem bike, changing cycling partners regularly but completing the 24 hours personally.
He now wished to do a 24 hour challenge on a rowing machine to set a record but, because of his condition, he required back and side supports on the seat of the machine. Back and side supports needed to be safe, comfortable and strong enough to sustain the punishing 24 hour challenge.
The solution
3mm aluminium plate was attached to the seat base with ultra strong double sided tape and M6 hardware reinforced with 30mm aluminium angle welded to the plate, to this was added a thick walled aluminium tube bearing housing to accommodate 16mm ID Oilite bushings and abutments to control the back rest angle, aluminium angle braces.
The backrest was made from 25mm thick walled aluminium square tube with cross braces and the side supports were made from bent aluminium 20 mm rod. An adjustable latching seat belt was added across the side supports to retain the client and suitable foam padding was added to the back and side supports. A 16mm bronze rod was used as the back rest pivot.
The benefit
The client can now attempt his 24 hour challenge held safely on his rowing machine for his world challenge.
