Wheelchair Adaptation for Drum Effects Pedal
Jonny is a professional drummer and full-time manual wheelchair user. He wants to be able to use a multi-effects pedal without using his feet.
The Challenge
Jonny had a programmable effects pedal and wanted to be able to mount it to the back of his wheelchair, with an extended pad that he could press by leaning back while playing.
The solution had to include routing for MIDI and USB cables, be quickly and easily installed and removed, and had to look discreet as it would be used on stage.

The solution
A local sheet metal fabrication company kindly made a bespoke holder that the pedal unit slides into. This was attached to the chair by straps with squeeze buckles for rapid release. A piece of plastic drainpipe extended the width of the pad and a ring was attached for cable routing.
The pedal can easily be transferred to another wheelchair if required.

The benefit
One of the ensembles that Jonny plays for is Paraorchestra, which is known for incorporating innovative techniques into its performances. The ability to use pedal effects will extend the scope of his work with Paraorchestra and elsewhere.
