Wheelchair arm side rest
A simple gel side rest for a wheelchair arm for a client with involuntary movements.
The Challenge
Our client is a young lady who needed extra support to one side of the L/H armrest on her wheelchair. Our local Wheelchair Services had rigged up a second armrest pad at right angles to the existing one, but this was just a temporary measure being too high, stuck out too far, and was a little unsightly with various mount holes visible. Arm gutter supports such as those made by Otto Bock had been tried but were not supportive enough. “Trough sides” from Gel Ovations had also been tried but tended not to give enough support either in this case and stuck out a little too far. Wheelchair Services reached out to REMAP for a bit of help.
The solution
Wheelchair Services donated a narrow gel armrest from their stock and REMAP made a couple of bespoke brackets to position it in exactly the right place for the client, and also made a matte black perspex plate to cover up the assorted mounting holes on the underside of this armrest to improve the look.
The benefit
Our client now has comfortable arm support.
