Art Headset
The project aims to enhance the artistic capabilities of residents at St. Bridgit’s, a Leonard Cheshire Disability home in West Sussex. By designing specialised headgear and a versatile easel, the initiative seeks to empower individuals with disabilities to engage in painting independently. The project began with a series of meetings to understand the specific needs of the residents, culminating in the development of a tailored solution that combines comfort and functionality.
The Challenge
Residents at St. Bridgit’s face significant barriers to artistic expression due to physical limitations. Many individuals, including those with dystonic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, require adaptive equipment that allows them to create art without relying solely on traditional methods. The challenge was to design headgear that could securely hold a paintbrush and accommodate various users, along with an easel that would support different orientations while maintaining stability. This necessitated a collaborative approach to ensure that every aspect of the design met the unique requirements of the residents.
The solution
To address these challenges, a multi-faceted solution was developed. The headgear, designed to be adjustable like a bike helmet, allows for a secure fit and easy modification for different users. This ensures that multiple residents can benefit from the equipment. Additionally, the easel was designed to clamp onto adjustable tables, providing the necessary flexibility for users to paint either vertically or at a forward angle. This combination of headgear and easel not only meets the functional needs of the residents but also incorporates their feedback to ensure usability and comfort.
The benefit
The implementation of this project promises to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents at St. Bridgit’s by fostering creativity and self-expression through art. With the new headgear and easel, individuals will have the opportunity to engage in painting activities independently, promoting a sense of achievement and boosting their confidence. Furthermore, this initiative encourages social interaction among residents, as they can share their artistic experiences and collaborate on projects, ultimately enriching the community atmosphere at the home.
